“Floor Reel” Wins World Record Billfish Prize at White Marlin Open

A very big congratulations to the Belcher family and the team aboard Floor Reel for their impressive win at the White Marlin Open. Their 640.5-pound blue marlin secured them a jackpot of over $6.2M! The captain and crew aboard Floor Reel enjoy ultra-pure water produced by the latest technology from Blue Water Desalination.

While the White Marlin Open is known as the richest billfish tournament in the world, a prize payout this big is unheard of. It was made possible due to this blue marlin, caught by angler John Ols, being the only qualifying fish brought to the scales during the tournament. Tournament rules dictate how the prize money for white and blue marlin, and first, second and third place is disbursed, but with only one qualifying billfish brought to the scales, it became a winner-take-all payout.

The total tournament purse for the 50th edition of this Ocean City, Maryland, USA tournament exceeded $10.5M so there was over $4M awarded to other categories including tuna, top boat, top angler and more.

The Floor Reel is a 57-foot custom sportfishing boat which is equipped with the latest in cutting-edge watermaker technology from Blue Water Desalination. Near-endless freshwater is produced by their Express XT 600 in the boat, while a ClearMate Mobile purifies water back at the dock for a spotless washdown. We are so excited for the owners, captain and crew of Floor Reel on this win and we are grateful for them entrusting their freshwater needs, both on the water and at the docks, to our innovative marine desalination systems.

Another exciting year of Marlin Madness has come to a close and we want to give a nod to all of the teams throughout the competition from nomination to the Final Four. And, a big congratulations to CRISDEL from the East Coast bracket for taking home the 2023 title!
Marlin Madness, hosted by Marlin Magazine and presented by Blue Water Desalination is an exciting multi-round event that allows followers and enthusiasts to vote for their favorite sportfishing teams through March and April. The brackets are split into four geographic regions, which culminate in Sportfishing’s Final Four fan favorites which is followed by the Championship voting to decide the winner.
