“Floor Reel” Wins World Record Billfish Prize at White Marlin Open

A very big congratulations to the Belcher family and the team aboard Floor Reel for their impressive win at the White Marlin Open. Their 640.5-pound blue marlin secured them a jackpot of over $6.2M! The captain and crew aboard Floor Reel enjoy ultra-pure water produced by the latest technology from Blue Water Desalination.

While the White Marlin Open is known as the richest billfish tournament in the world, a prize payout this big is unheard of. It was made possible due to this blue marlin, caught by angler John Ols, being the only qualifying fish brought to the scales during the tournament. Tournament rules dictate how the prize money for white and blue marlin, and first, second and third place is disbursed, but with only one qualifying billfish brought to the scales, it became a winner-take-all payout.

The total tournament purse for the 50th edition of this Ocean City, Maryland, USA tournament exceeded $10.5M so there was over $4M awarded to other categories including tuna, top boat, top angler and more.

The Floor Reel is a 57-foot custom sportfishing boat which is equipped with the latest in cutting-edge watermaker technology from Blue Water Desalination. Near-endless freshwater is produced by their Express XT 600 in the boat, while a ClearMate Mobile purifies water back at the dock for a spotless washdown. We are so excited for the owners, captain and crew of Floor Reel on this win and we are grateful for them entrusting their freshwater needs, both on the water and at the docks, to our innovative marine desalination systems.

The REHAB Fishing Team Chooses Blue Water Desalination

“You can stay out longer when you have access to more and more fresh water,” declared Jasen Gast, after having a new Blue Water Desalination Express XT 600 installed on his 45’ Buddy Davis sportfish REHAB. Gast hails from Freeport, Texas and enjoys fishing throughout the Gulf of Mexico – both for fun and for lucrative tournament purses.

Fishing along the Gulf Coast of Texas is a bit different from some other areas. To hunt billfish, you must travel 80 to 125 miles offshore. These distances aren’t well-traveled in a single day and involve overnight and 3-day fishing trips for most boats.

Casa Vieja Lodge Anglers enjoy endless water thanks to Blue Water Desalination

There comes a point in every captain and boat owner’s career where a piece of equipment that once was seen as a luxury becomes a straight-up necessity. Captain David Salazar, owner/operator of the Casa Vieja Fishing Lodge in Guatemala, recently reached that tipping point with the water supplies aboard several of his fleet’s custom sportfish boats. Captain Salazar explains, “With only so many gallons in the freshwater tanks, we were literally rationing water gallon-by-gallon during our day and overnight fishing trips.”

Blue Water Desalination’s Managing Director, Jim Santa has known Captain Salazar for many years, so it was an easy decision for Salazar to seek out Jim’s advice on equipping the fleet with marine watermakers. “I’ve known Jim for a long time, and our friendship definitely played a role in choosing Blue Water, but the quality and advanced features of the products helped seal the deal,” he explained.
